Website This site is a collection of stories from migrants from a range of different countries who have settled in Australia. It paints a great picture of why they came, the experiences on their journey and the lives they built in their new home, Australia. These stories talk about the opportunities people have found in Australia and looks at the skills they have brought to their new home. |
Seeking Refuge: Navid's Journey from Iran
Animation BBC When Navid’s father’s life was in danger, he fled their home in Iran and came to the UK. A couple of years later, Navid and his mother followed, and travelled a long journey to England, mostly overland. Now 16, Navid describes the difficult journey he and his mother took when he was five, as well as how it felt adjusting to life in the UK. A year-by-year description of events across the world which may have caused many people to migrate to other countries. The timeline looks at political events, wars, religion, government, health and the arts. This is a university website with some hard words which is for stronger readers. Website Creative Spirits This page is a great starting point for looking at Aboriginal people who have had a significant impact on Australian society in areas such as sport, design and politics. This site does not provide a lot of detail about these people so you will have to search for more information. Migration Statistics
Website Australian Bureau of Statistics Use this website to find hard facts about how many people have migrated to Australia over the last century. By examining the diagrams you can find out which countries most of Australia's migrants come from. You might need a teacher or parent help with this site because it is not very user friendly and you need to read charts and diagrams. More than 65 years of Post-war migration
Website Department of Immigration & Border Protection website A fact sheet which explains many of the reasons why mass immigration occurred from after World War 2. It also discusses the impact of such a large increase of migrants on Australian society. The facts are easy to read because they are written in bullet-point form. |

The great thing about this website is that you search for stories by people from certain countries, arrival date and the city they arrived in Australia.
